Mes courants électriques (English: "My Electric Currents") is the second studio album by the French singer Alizée, released on 18 March 2003 through Polydor. The album was produced by Laurent Boutonnat and Mylène Farmer. The album's lyrics, written by Mylène Farmer, incorporate poetic language and subtle elements of melancholy, addressing recurring themes such as emotional longing, romantic desire, and personal reflection. The music, composed by Laurent Boutonnat, features a blend of electronic and pop influences, characterized by atmospheric arrangements and polished production. This electro-pop aesthetic marks a stylistic shift from Alizée's earlier work, reflecting an evolution in her sound and artistic direction.
Background[]
On 28 November 2000, Alizée released her debut album, "Gourmandises" (2000) in France, and released the album internationally on 13 March 2001. The album produced four singles, including the global top-five hits "Moi... Lolita," "L'Alizé," and "Gourmandises," each of which received notable commercial success. "Moi... Lolita" reached diamond status in France,[1] while "L'Alizé" was certified platinum,[2] and "Gourmandises" also achieved success, receiving significant chart positions across multiple countries.[3][4][5] To promote "Gourmandises" and her subsequent album, Alizée embarked on the En concert Tour in late 2003, which helped boost the later success of Mes courants électriques.[6] Music critics and scholars have highlighted the album's lasting influence on popular music, particularly for its role in reintroducing electronic music into the mainstream pop scene.[7] Praised by critics as a standout in modern French pop, the album received widespread acclaim upon its release, with reviewers highlighting the singer's vocal performance and musical direction.[8][9]
Composition[]
After the success of her debut studio album, she started working on her second studio album. Recording sessions took place in more studios than the previous album. The studios that were involved were Studio Guillaume Tell, Caliphora Studio, and Studio Davout.[10] Mes courants électriques tones down some of the overt sexual themes of her debut album but retains the energy.[11] The album was digitally mastered using 24-bit technology and follows the libertine philosophy of her mentor, Mylène Farmer.[12]
Music and lyrics[]
"Toc de mac" is a cheeky and clever song that plays with words and double meanings.[13] The lyrics revolve around a flirtatious interaction, where Alizée teases a guy with a flashy style ("mac" being slang for a showy or slick guy).[14][13] Musically, "Toc de mac" blends electro-pop, funk, and french pop, with a groovy bassline and an upbeat rhythm.[15] In "Amélie m’a dit" ("Amélie Told Me"), the lyrics play with the idea of imagination and mystery, blending truth with fantasy.[16] The track is a mix of French pop, dream pop, and chanson, with a soft, slightly surreal sound.[17] "C'est trop tard" ("It’s Too Late") is a song about regret and missed opportunities in a relationship.[18] The lyrics reflect the realization that it's too late to fix things or turn back time, as the person comes to terms with the end of a romantic connection.[19] The song is a pop ballad with elements of French chanson.[20]
"Tempête" ("Storm") is a powerful and emotional song about turmoil and inner conflict.[21] The lyrics describe a personal storm, metaphorically representing the chaos and emotional turbulence the protagonist is experiencing.[21] The song is a mix of French pop and rock, with an intense and dramatic atmosphere.[22] "Hey! Amigo!" is a fun, playful song about a carefree, flirtatious encounter with someone.[23] The lyrics hint at a lighthearted connection, as she sings about playful interactions and a carefree attitude toward relationships.[23] The track is a lively mix of Latin-inspired pop and electro-pop.[24]
"L'email a des ailes" ("The Email Has Wings") is a modern song that reflects on the power of digital communication in today's world.[25] The lyrics explore the speed and ease with which messages can travel, as if they have wings, instantly connecting people across distances.[25] The song blends electro-pop with dance elements, featuring a catchy, upbeat rhythm and electronic beats.[26] "Youpidou" is a fun song filled with lyrics that convey a sense of carefree joy, with Alizée singing about living in the moment and enjoying life without overthinking.[27] The track is a blend of French pop and dance-pop, with upbeat rhythms, catchy hooks, and an infectious chorus.[28] "Cœur déjà pris" ("Heart Already Taken") is a song about the complications of love and unrequited feelings.[29] The song is a pop ballad with chanson influences, featuring a slower, more introspective tempo.[30]
Singles[]
J'en ai marre ![]
Upon release, "J'en ai marre !" achieved notable chart success in several countries following its release in February 2003. In France, the song peaked at number 4 on the French Singles Chart, maintaining a strong presence in the top ten for multiple weeks.[31] It reached the top 5 in Belgium (Wallonia) at number 5,[32] while performing slightly lower in Belgium (Flanders), where it peaked at number 18.[33] In Switzerland, the track climbed to number 5,[34] and in Germany, it reached number 21 on the Offizielle Deutsche Charts.[35] In Austria, it peaked at number 43,[36] and in Italy, the single achieved a peak position of number 23.[37] The song also appeared on charts in Sweden at number 57,[38] and in Hungary, where it reached number 40 on the Rádiós Top 40.[39] Outside of Europe, "J'en ai marre !" saw strong success in Japan, where it peaked at number 2,[40] marking one of Alizée's highest international chart positions. In France, the single was certified gold twice by SNEP for exceeding sales of 250,000.[41] In Belgium, the single was certified gold for copies exceeding 25,000.[42]
J'ai pas vingt ans ![]
The subsequent single "J'ai pas vingt ans !" achieved moderate chart success in several countries following its release in June 2003. In France, the single peaked at number 17 on the French Singles Chart and remained on the chart for 22 weeks.[43] It also charted in Belgium (Wallonia), reaching number 20 and staying for 14 weeks,[44] and in Switzerland, where it peaked at number 60 and charted for 6 weeks.[45] In Germany, the track entered the charts at number 59, remaining for 3 weeks.[46] The single also appeared on the charts in Spain, peaking at number 19 for 2 weeks,[47] and in Poland, where it reached number 3 on the airplay chart.[48] Additionally, it charted in Austria, peaking at number 60 for 3 weeks,[49] and in the Netherlands, where it peaked at number 60 for 6 weeks.[50]
À contre-courant[]
The final single "À contre-courant", released on October 2003, experienced moderate chart performance in several territories. In France, the single peaked at number 22 on the French Singles Chart and remained on the chart for 11 weeks.[51] It also charted in Belgium (Wallonia), where it reached number 32 and stayed for 7 weeks,[52] and in the Flanders region, the single peaked at number 60.[53] In Switzerland, it peaked at number 64 and lasted 4 weeks on the chart.[54] The single also appeared briefly in Germany, reaching number 95.[55] While "À contre-courant" did not achieve the commercial impact of the album’s earlier singles, it continued to contribute to Alizée’s presence in the European pop scene during this period.[56][57]
Commercial performance[]
Upon release, the album received positive sales. Building on the momentum of her debut, the album debuted in the top 3 of the French Albums Chart and was certified double gold by SNEP, denoting over 400,000 copies sold in France alone.[58][59] Internationally, the album found significant success in countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, and Japan, where Alizée had already developed a strong fanbase.[60][61] In Japan, the album was re-released with bonus tracks[62] and charted on the Oricon International Charts, reflecting her growing global appeal.[60][63][64] Singles like "J'en ai marre!" and "J'ai pas vingt ans" played a major role in driving the album's popularity, receiving airplay and appearing in international compilations.[65]
Critical reception[]
When the album was released, the album received positive reviews. One review written by Michael McCarthy for Lollipop Magazine states that the album, "Alizée's voice still sounds as sweet and youthful as it did on Gourmandises... but there exists a nice progression between the two albums. There are little things she does with her voice on Mes Courants Electriques that show her growth as a singer."[66] The writer also comments on some songs, saying that, "The first single, "J'en ai marre!," translates to "I'm Fed Up!" in English, yet she sings it playfully, as if she's having a great time, merely being sarcastic. Which makes sense, since the lyrics would seem to be about forgetting her troubles in a bubble bath... Easier to understand is "Amélie m'a dit," which would seem to be a nice homage to the movie of the same name that translates as "Amélie Told Me"".[67]
Another review from the website Laut.de describes the album as, "With "Mes Courants Electriques," Alizée delivers her second full-length album, on time within two years. As expected, it features tame, French summer pop with a "bewitchingly light touch." There's not much more to say about it. Except perhaps that the editorial consensus forecast calls for a chart placement in the top 30."[68]
Loïc Bussières, a reviewer for RFI Musique, states that, "My Electric Currents, her second delivery, is legitimately in line with the formula that made her famous, serving a slightly more adult Alizée to teens in need of an idol, while capitalizing on the "Lolita touch" initiated by her coaches...Certainly, the whole thing is quite listenable, if not original, but the finery, well-packaged variet'toc, the overdose of vaporous choruses and the occasional mawkishness inspire the greatest circumspection. Anything but alternative (that's not the point anyway), these Courants électriques are nevertheless equipped to score a comfortable score in record stores."[69]
In its 19 March 2003 critique, Krinein Musique awarded Mes courants électriques a score of 4.5 out of 10, dismissively quipping that the album “isn’t much better than zucchini”.[70] The review acknowledges Alizée’s transition into adulthood—both in appearance and vocal maturity—yet criticizes the album for lacking originality, noting a strong resemblance to her mentor Mylène Farmer’s musical style.[71] While Alizée’s voice is described as deeper, more nuanced, and more poised than before, the album is faulted for generic themes and melodies, catering to repeated adolescent stereotypes about love, growing up, and life’s passage.[72] The author particularly lambasts the lyrics as “completely stupid” or downright exasperating, and questions the sincerity of Alizée’s delivery.[73] Overall, the review suggests the album offers nothing substantively new to French pop and relies too heavily on familiar formulas.[74]
Release and promotion[]
For the promotion of the album, Alizée traveled around the world performing in different places. After the success of Gourmandises, the singer returned to France to promote her second studio album. The first single extracted from the album was "J'en ai marre!", officially released in February 2003. The single was made available in music stores as well as radio stations. To promote the single, Alizée appeared on the French radio station NRJ.[75] The video for the single was released for broadcast in March, though it was made available on MTV and many other TV channels. It was released on physical media, both CD and vinyl, in the same month.[76] After the release of the single came a total success playing on all radio stations and on TV shows, ranking in the top charts of many countries.
In early 2003, prior to the official release of Alizée's second studio album Mes courants électriques, the English version of her lead single, titled "I'm Fed Up!" (known as "Mon bain de mousse" in Japan),[77] was leaked online approximately a month before the album's scheduled debut.[78] Although the specific track wasn't named, a press release confirmed the leak and provided details about the album's title and release timeline.[79]
Tour[]
During this period, Alizée was preparing for promotional activities in Japan, a key market for the album's international reach.[80] Her promotional efforts in Japan included appearances on various television programs, interviews with local media, and serving as a spokeswoman for several Japanese brands.[80] Upon returning to France, Alizée released the second single from the album, "J'ai pas vingt ans!" along with its English counterpart, "I'm Not Twenty." To promote the single and the album, she performed at the official event show of the Tour de France 2003 in Paris.[81][82]
