"Gourmandises" (English: "Delicacies") is a song by French singer Alizée, released on 13 August 2001 as the fourth and final single from her debut album, Gourmandises (2000), through the label Polydor and Universal. The song was written and produced by Mylene Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat. The lyrics explore themes of youthful desire and sensuality, employing metaphors related to sweet treats to illustrate experiences of love and intimacy.
Background[]
In 1999, Alizée appeared on the M6 channel's talent show Graines de star.[1][2] Initially she intended to sign up for the program's dance contest, but that category was reserved for groups only.[3] Alizée therefore joined the singing category instead, performing the song "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez and "Ma Prière" (a single released by Axelle Red in 1997).[4][5] She went on to win the Meilleure Graine award for most promising young singing star of tomorrow.[6] Her winning performance was seen by Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat, who were looking for a young, fresh voice to partake in their new project.[7][8] They approached Alizée, and she was selected after studio auditions.[9] In early May 2000, French media outlets revealed that singer-songwriter Mylène Farmer and composer Laurent Boutonnat were launching a new musical project with a previously unknown teenager named Alizée Jacotey, along the title headline of "Leur bébé s'appelle Alizée".[10] The announcement was notably made in the 8 May 2000 issue of Voici magazine, which referred to her as the duo’s “new protégée.”[11] Alizée had been selected following her participation in the talent show Graines de Star, where she caught the attention of Farmer and Boutonnat.[11]
Composition[]
Alizée's single "Gourmandises" was composed by Laurent Boutonnat and penned by lyricist Mylène Farmer.[12] The track was recorded between June and September 2000 at Studio Guillaume Tell in Suresnes, France. Boutonnat's composition blends dance-pop and French pop elements, featuring electronic instrumentation that complements Alizée's vocals.[13] The production includes keyboards and programming by Boutonnat, creating an upbeat and catchy melody that aligns with the song's playful theme.[14] The recording process involved a team of musicians and technicians, including guitarist Slim Pezin, drummer Matthieu Rabaté, bassist Bernard Paganotti, and engineers Jérôme Devoise and Didier Lozahic.[15] The song is composed in G minor, with a tempo (BPM) of 125.[16]
Commercial performance[]
Upon release, the song achieved moderate success across several European charts. In France, the song debuted at number 15 and peaked at number 14 on the French Singles Chart (SNEP), and stayed on the charts for a total of 29 weeks.[17] The single was certified gold for sales of 125,000 copies sold.[18] In Belgium (Wallonia), the song entered the charts at number 25, peaked at number 21, and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks.[19] In Switzerland, the song entered and peaked at number 70 on the Swiss HitParade charts, and stayed on the charts for 5 weeks.[20]
Critical reception[]
RFI Musique described the song as a blend of "rhythmic synths, violins, and techno-pop" wrapped in a "satiny package," noting its lyrical innuendo and sensuality reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg’s style.[21]
Music video[]
The video for the single was directed by Nicolas Hidiroglou, and was premiered on 25 July 2001 in M6. In the music video, Alizée is shown enjoying a carefree afternoon in a picturesque park, surrounded by a group of close friends. The group is seen relaxing on a blanket spread across the grass, basking in the sunlight and sharing laughter.[22] As the video builds toward the final chorus, the picnic scene becomes even more animated and joyful. The assortment of delicacies—candies, fruits, and other treats—are playfully scattered, adding to the carefree chaos of the moment. Alizée and her friends spring to their feet, laughing as they chase one another through the open, sun-drenched park.[23]
